Renovation of iconic ”Ørkenfortet”

The hotel NH Collection Copenhagen has moved in at the iconic address in Christianshavn and is one of the few 5-star hotels in Copenhagen. With its unique waterfront view and its impressive size, the hotel will undoubtedly have a special place among hotels in the Danish capital. The former office building from 1962 is known among citizens of Copenhagen as “Ørkenfortet”, meaning desert fortress, and earned its name because of its large concrete facade.

The extensive renovation and modernisation of the historic building is designed by architects from Arkitema Architects and Henning Larsen Architects. With a desire to make the building more welcoming, the new design has given the facade a more open and transparent look. As part of the renovation, a 7th floor has been added to the building and thus 5,000 m2 more to the already 25,000 m2.

Sustainable & comprehensive facade renovation

BB fiberbeton produced around 3.500 facade elements in GRC, corresponding to 4.400 m2 GRC. The elements included columns and corner columns in 15 variants, 2 kinds of parapets and facade blocks in 15 variants.

A lot of experimentation was done with the surface to achieve an expression that took inspiration from the original characteristic architecture of the building. The result is a surface with 10 mm exposed aggregates, which gives a contrast-filled and lively expression. The elements are mounted with embedded brackets, taking advantage of the possibility of a concealed mounting, so that the result appears solid.

DGNB certification

ATP Ejendomme, the developer on the project, decided from the beginning that the renovation should be DGNB certified and as one of the first renovation projects in Denmark, the construction project is the first hotel renovation to be certified with DGNB gold.

With high environmental requirements for building materials, glassfibre reinforced concrete is ideal for environmental certifications. The material itself is sustainable and so is the production. Here you can read more about the sustainability of GRC. BB fiberbeton also produced GRC elements for the first renovation project certified with DGNB gold in Denmark. Durable, lightweight, formable

GRC cladding

Through design and manufacturing we help architects, entrepreneurs, and builders create unique, durable, and sustainable facades. Whether you are starting construction on a new build or embarking on a renovation project, GRC is suitable for both.

Glassfibre reinforced concrete (GRC or GFRC) is incredibly versatile and grants you an architectural design freedom with almost endless possibilities. With the formability of GRC you can achieve any geometry and with a surface designed for your specific project. GRC is a lightweight material and our cladding elements are typically only 12 mm. Thus, making it easier to work with and transport whilst also easing the load on buildings.

GRC is an excellent facade material if durability and sustainability is of great concern and importance. GRC is durable for more than 100 years without any technical maintenance and it does not dent, rot, corrode, nor burn (class A material). With a sustainable material and an environmentally friendly production without toxic materials, GRC elements from BB fiberbeton are ideal for environmental certifications, such as LEED, DGNB, and BREEAM.

GRC is made of white cement and fine aggregates and reinforced with glassfibre. Elements are produced using a special spray-technique that allows for a low water/cement-ratio, a low thickness, and a high strength.
