Large scale GRC art
The several meter high fruit and vegetable sculptures that decorate the entrances of Herlev Hospital and the green areas are a distinct GRC project for BB fiberbeton.
Danish art group Superflex are behind the art project which is comprised of six large sculptures of selected fruits and vegetables.
The sculptures are scaled renditions of a pear, carrot, potato, broccoli, a gralic and a strawberry.
The art can be found at various entrances and in the green areas surrounding the hospital. This way the art can be enjoyed by not only patients and employees, but also by residents who use the green areas.
Formable GRC with a high level of detail
The six fruit and vegetable sculptures has gone through various scanning methods, including MRI, laser, and photogrammetry, to get the 3D-coordinates for the surfaces.
As such, it was possible to recreate accurate 3D models. The 3D sculpting, mould making, construction, and finishing was executed 10tons.
The sculptures are cast in white GRC so they harmonise with the surrounding buildings and have a classic clean look.
They all have a thickness of only 20 mm and are between 2,5 and 3,5 meters high – the carrot is 13,5 meters long.
The project is a unique expression of the exceptional formability and level detail achievable with GRC.
GRCA GRC2023 Award winner
BB fiberbeton A/S entered the project for nomination in the "Best Non-architectural Landscaping GRC application/product"-category of the GRCA Awards Ceremony, May 2023.
Herlev Hospital Sculptures won the GRCA GRC2023 Award, having been chosen by a panel of external judges, among 11 nominated projects from Full Members of GRCA.

With a sustainable material and an environmentally friendly production without toxic materials, GRC elements from BB fiberbeton are ideal for environmental certifications, such as LEED, DGNB, and BREEAM.
GRC is made of white cement and fine aggregates and reinforced with glassfibre. Elements are produced using a special spray-technique that allows for a low water/cement-ratio, a low thickness, and a high strength.
