A contrast between the industrial and nature
The development on Ørestads Boulevard in Copenhagen, commonly known as Kronehaverne, consist of eight buildings in varying heights. They all have the same raw and industrial architectural expression. Architects from Cobe ApS are behind the design and the simple facade combines concrete and aluminum with large windows, that invite in lots of daylight. The interplay between the raw expression of the facade and the surrounding nature unfolds in the many green rooftop gardens that create a shared outdoor space for residents. The eight buildings consist of both private apartments, common housing, businesses, and a daycare.
Sustainable facade materials
In this project, sustainability had a great significance and five of the buildings, which AP Ejendomme was the builder for, are certified with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. All eight buildings are built with the same materials and after the same principles. Thus, all buildings live up to the high requirements for materials and the buildings’ entire life cycle.
A huge factor in the environmental impact of a development is the consumption of energy in the production of building materials, such as the facade elements. At BB fiberbeton, we have an environmentally friendly production without toxic materials and with a low consumption of energy. We have an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) for our facade elements, which documents an assessment of the consumption of energy and resources as well as the environmental impact during the product’s life cycle. The EPD is a useful tool when calculating a construction’s environmental footprint, for example for a Nordic Swan Ecolabel.
For this project, we delivered beams and columns for the facade. We manufactured a total of more than 2.500 elements in 96 variants, corresponding to around 5.900 m2 GRC. The elements are 12 mm thin and is mounted with recessed holes with plugs in the same material. All elements are coloured in our BBf no. 68 standard white.
Durable, lightweight, formable
GRC cladding
Through design and manufacturing we help architects, entrepreneurs, and builders create unique, durable, and sustainable facades. Whether you are starting construction on a new build or embarking on a renovation project, GRC is suitable for both.
Glassfibre reinforced concrete (GRC or GFRC) is incredibly versatile and grants you an architectural design freedom with almost endless possibilities. With the formability of GRC you can achieve any geometry and with a surface designed for your specific project. GRC is a lightweight material and our cladding elements are typically only 12 mm. Thus, making it easier to work with and transport whilst also easing the load on buildings.
GRC is an excellent facade material if durability and sustainability is of great concern and importance. GRC is durable for more than 100 years without any technical maintenance and it does not dent, rot, corrode, nor burn (class A material). With a sustainable material and an environmentally friendly production without toxic materials, GRC elements from BB fiberbeton are ideal for environmental certifications, such as LEED, DGNB, and BREEAM.
GRC is made of white cement and fine aggregates and reinforced with glassfibre. Elements are produced using a special spray-technique that allows for a low water/cement-ratio, a low thickness, and a high strength.
